Cynic: Carbon-Based Anatomy – new EP

Cynic_CarbonBasedAnatomy

The new EP entitled ‘Carbon-Based Anatomy’ was described by CYNIC co-founder Paul Masvidal as “both a philosophical as well as a musical journey, one that begins in the Amazon jungle on the lips of a shamanic wise-woman (as portrayed by singer Amy Correia) and ends in outerspace”. Released today, November 11th, 2011 in Europe (November 15th, 2011 in the U.S.), on Season Of Mist Records, ‘Carbon-Based Anatomy’ was produced by Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert. The artwork was created by Roberto E. Venosa, artist responsible for all previous CYNIC album covers. “Masvidal's unfiltered voice is stunning… And it still sounds like he’s exploring new vocal territory, to boot: parts of his performance on ‘Bones’ are downright punkish, which somehow works despite the fact that the song is not the least bit punk. When a choir periodically joins him, the emotional effect is such that listeners might start to feel a little tight in the throat - I don’t mind admitting that I did,” [went all mellow MetalSucks' Axl Rosenberg] “But beyond just the vocals, the musicianship itself just feels more, well, limber. On both ‘Anatomy’ and ‘Elves’, Masvidal's guitar playing reaches a place that is, for lack of a better term, Gilmourian, and while I don’t know very much about his actual writing process, his solos feel very off-the-cuff in the best possible way, richly detailed and larger-than-life. And while it’s no secret that Reinert is a genius drummer, he positively explodes out of this EP; his playing is at once poetic and primal, smooth yet swinging, measured but driving, forceful but never overbearing. He’s one of the few drummers in rock music today who I could listen to all by himself for hours on end,” [there’s much more and you’ll find it here]

“When CYNIC finally returned after 15 years of absence since the release of their legendary debut ‘Focus’ (1993) with ‘Traced In Air’ (2008), they did so with enormous success. Raving reviews and high sales catapulted the U.S. band onto all major festivals and back to the forefront of progressive metal music. Now CYNIC embark on a musical journey that will considerably widen their audience with ‘Carbon-Based Anatomy’. By moving carefully away from the progressive death metal formula, which they helped to establish, the Americans create more open sounds that include 70s-inspired prog-rock, shoegaze, tribal folk and futuristic alien shapes. This development was heralded by the experimental EP ‘Re-Traced’ (2010), which their huge fan-base eagerly adapted and praised. Primal and direct, haunting and hymnal, this is CYNIC's most immediate and urgent offering to date!” [went straight to the point the press release]

CYNIC features: Paul Masvidal – vocals and guitars, Sean Reinert - drums, percussion and keyboards and the newly added Brandon Giffin - bass (live) and Max Phelps - guitar and vocals (live)
