Threat Signal: Threat Signal – new album

ThreatSignal_self-titled

New self-titled album by Canadian modern metallers THREAT SIGNAL is being released today, October 11th, 2011 via Nuclear Blast Records. ‘Threat Signal’, the record, was produced and mixed by audio mastermind Zeuss at Planet-Z Recordings in Hadley, Massachusetts. Album's artwork was created by Colin Marks. Below you’ll find three brand new THREAT SIGNAL tunes, ‘Face The Day’, ‘Trust In None’ and ‘Fallen Disciples’; download the latter for free by visiting the band's Facebook page. ‘Threat Signal’, the band's third release on Nuclear Blast and third full-length overall, comes in all kinds of physical and digital formats (“Signs are pointing to storm! Lose no time and get hold of a copy of this burning hot piece through the Nuclear Blast webshop,” says Nuclear Blast) available through here:

THREAT SIGNAL were formed in 2003 in Hamilton, Ontario, by cousins singer Jon and lead guitarist Rich Howard, who later added composer and guitarist Kyle McKnight, drummer Adam Matthews and bassist Eric Papky to the lineup. Combining the complexity of thrash metal with a more contemporary groove sound involving technical rhythms and melodic musical passages, THREAT SIGNAL succeeded in generating a significant interest within online metal community even before the band had played a single live show; with four of their demo tracks achieving heavy airplay on various websites. The band released ‘Rational Eyes’ EP through the Gomek Records in 2005 as Marco Bresette replaced Eric Papky on bass guitar. Drummer Matthews left to be replaced by George Parfitt. THREAT SIGNAL signed to Nuclear Blast Records and recorded their first album, 2006's ‘Under Reprisal’, with producer (and ex-FEAR FACTORY bassist) Christian Olde Wolbers:

“Unlike most of yer more melodically oriented death metal bands, which usually have one of the guitarists providing clean vocals in counterpoint to the lead screamer's shredded larynx bellow, Howard handles both styles on ‘Under Reprisal’, and while his clean vocals are perfectly good, it’s his screaming that really pins the listener's ears back. (To put it in strictly Canadian terms, he really knows how to give 'er.) … Add to this the fact that the songs are both melodically strong (‘A New Beginning’ kicks off with an opening guitar riff that could be this generation of budding metal guitarists' very own ‘Sweet Child o' Mine’ before locking into a killer stutter-step unison riff that sounds like a funkier PANTERA) and suitable for full-on banging, and ‘Under Reprisal’ is clearly one of the better pure metal albums of 2006,” [stated Stewart Mason, AllMusic – more here, audible proof below]

In 2006 founding guitarist Howard split, with Bressette taking over lead guitar duties while Pat Kavanagh was drafted into the bass slot. But the lineup was not to be stable for long as Bressette, guitarist Kyle McKnight and drummer George Parfitt also departed from the band late 2007. THREAT SIGNAL's second album, ‘Vigilance’ was produced by then the only founding member left in the band, vocalist Jon Howard and mixed by Greg Reely. Alongside Howard, ‘Vigilance’ featured Travis Montgomery on lead guitar, Adam Weber on rhythm guitar, Pat Kavanagh on bass and Norman Kileen on drums:

“While ‘Vigilance’ isn’t full-fledged metalcore, the album's lyrics have a strong hardcore aesthetic. Memorable tracks like ‘United We Stand’ and ‘Revision’ have that “angry as hell, but positive and hopeful” vibe that is so common in metalcore and hardcore. In fact, ‘Vigilance’ is memorable more often than not. There are a few mediocre tracks, but overall, this sophomore outing underscores Howard's ability to keep THREAT SIGNAL healthy despite all those lineup changes,” [commented Alex Henderson, AllMusic – more here]

2010 brought about yet more shifts in the band's turbulent personnel department; rhythm guitarist Adam Weber left, soon followed by drummer Norman Killeen, whose positions were eventually filled by newcomers drummer Alex Rüdinger and guitarist Chris Feener.

Pain Of Salvation: Road Salt Two – new album

PainOfSalvation_RoadSaltTwo

Already out in Europe and awaiting its North American release on October the 11th, 2011, listen to the new and eight album by Sweden's PAIN OF SALVATION right here at AOL Music while you can. Entitled ‘Road Salt Two’, the twin-companion to the 2010 album ‘Road Salt One’, the album is said to contain twelve tracks of sweaty gravel, asphalt butterflies, untrodden paths and brave decisions, as lovingly described by the label InsideOut Music.

“Most of the music [off the new record] is actually material that started to be recorded at the same time, so I feel that I have to look at it as a “Road Salt journey” altogether… One that has been very, very long for me, starting already back in 2005/2006. But especially since the end of 2008 it has been like a main project that has been devouring me, like all projects do. So from that perspective it almost feels odd at this point to have it sort of behind me. It’s like I say in ‘Of Dust’ [a tune off ‘Road Salt One’]: when you’ve been walking down the road for a very long time you get to the point when you can’t distinguish yourself from the road. You and your journey become the same. You change the road and the road changes you. An all-in symbiosis, for good and bad,” [elaborated PAIN OF SALVATION's lyricist, chief composer, guitarist and lead vocalist Daniel Gildenlöw:]

PAIN OF SALVATION: Conditioned – courtesy of Inside Out Music

In 1984, at the age of eleven, Daniel Gildenlöw formed his band, “Reality”, in Eskilstuna, Sweden. He renamed it to PAIN OF SALVATION in 1991 and as such the group released six studio albums and one unplugged recording previous to the ‘Road Salt’ opus; among them classics such as ‘Scarsick’ (2007), ‘BE’ (2004) and ‘Remedy Lane’ (2002).

“The thing is I never know, do I?” [replied  Gildenlöw when asked where his creative road is heading] “The only thing I can say for sure is that I am bound to change. For me that’s just what it’s all about – I keep redefining music for myself and I keep redefining myself and my relation to music. If that would stagnate I am not so sure that I would feel very pushed to move on with it, because to me music is still a lot about experimenting and expressing. If you lose that I don’t really see the point of it… After all, I’m not heavily into entertainment music.”

Immortal Souls: IV: The Requiem For The Art Of Death – new album

ImmortalSouls_IV_TheRequiem

A day on which mercury is expected to climb up to 40 degrees Celsius in Israel (and Palestine, of course) is a good day for some “talvi” or “winter” metal. Such metal is being played by Finland's IMMORTAL SOULS, whose fourth full-length entitled ‘IV: The Requiem For The Art Of Death’ is being released in Europe today, October the 10th, 2011 through Dark Balance Records, and which will be released in the USA and Canada tomorrow, October the 11th, 2011 via Facedown Records. The album was recorded in 2010 at Fantom Studio in Tampere, Finland with Samu Oittinen, while the mixing was handled by Minerva Pappi at Finnvox, Helsinki. Album's lyrical content deals with death and mourning and is dedicated to the band's founders', brothers Aki and Esa Särkioja, father who passed away during the recording of the album. The video for the tune ‘Nuclear Winter’ was directed by Stefano Cerrato.

Founded in 1991 by bassist and vocalist Aki Särkioja and guitarist Esa Särkioja in Kokkola, Finland, IMMORTAL SOULS have experimented with doom metal before fully embracing the cold surroundings, incorporating them into their music:

“I would describe our music as fast paced and highly melodic; like a winter wind at a beautiful frost morning, heavy and aggressive; as fierce as winter can be,” [explains A. Särkioja]

After issuing a few “depressing and oppressive” demos, IMMORTAL SOULS signed a record deal with Finnish label Little Rose Productions and released a split with MORDECAI in 1998 (‘Divine Winter’ EP), which was then followed by their first proper album in 2001 entitled ‘Under The Northern Sky’. Appropriately titled ‘Ice Upon The Night’, released in 2003 via Dutch label Dark Fear and distributed in North America by Facedown Records, was reportedly received less enthusiastically than its predecessor by some European fans due to – of all things - the less wintry cover art on the European release. Not to push their luck any further I suppose, IMMORTAL SOULS' third album, 2007's ‘Wintereich’ (Dark Balance/Facedown Records) was issued with enough snow decorating its cover to calm even the most fanatical of winter enthusiasts.

IMMORTAL SOULS features: Aki Särkioja – vocals and bass, Esa Särkioja – lead guitar, Marko Pekkarinen – rhythm guitar and Juha Kronqvist – drums

Earth Crisis: Total War – new video

New video clip by veteran hardcore outfit EARTH CRISIS has just premiered over at AOL's Noisecreep. Filmed by Matt Spencer, ‘Total War’ comes from the band's sixth studio album entitled ‘Neutralize The Threat’, released via Century Media in July 2011 (and still being available for your listening pleasure in its entirety here on MetalSucks). Produced by Chris “Zeuss” Harris, ‘Neutralize The Threat’ is available as a CD, as a limited CD digipak and as a digital download, and you are welcome to buy form Century Media.

According to a press release, ‘Neutralize The Threat’ is a concept album of sorts; it doesn’t follow the traditional arc of opuses like PINK FLOYD's ‘The Wall’, or THE WHO's ‘Tommy’, whose central character drives the story along. Rather, the ten songs that comprise ‘Neutralize The Threat’ are all linked by a common theme of true-life vigilantism. Guitarist Scott Crouse explained:

“Every song is lyrically inspired by real-life vigilante actions that have taken place around the globe. The topics range from The Black Panther Party to Bernhard Goetz and we think it’s an original lyrical concept for the band, while also retaining some subject matter we are known for dealing with in the past.”

EARTH CRISIS was formed in 1991 in Syracuse, New York by Karl Buechner. AllMusic Guide's Ryan Downey explains the band's fundamentals thusly:

“EARTH CHRISIS chugging riffs and barked declarations served as the mouthpiece of America's militant vegan straight-edge movement throughout the '90s, detailing the ideas of animal and human liberation, drug-free living, and personal empowerment through hardcore song. The vegan straight-edge movement spawned activists who took the law into their own hands, burning down fur farms and freeing animals directly.” [More here]

Buechner, joined by guitarists Scott Crouse and Ben Read, bassist Ian “Bulldog” Edwards and drummer Michael Riccardi, delivered his first politically-charged message to “individuals searching for a straight path amidst a world of chaos” in form of 1992's EP ‘All Out War’. Riccardi was replaced by Dennis Merrick on ‘Firestorm’, the second EP released in 1993 (Victory Records), with Kris Wiechmann joining shortly after to replace Read on guitar:

“For the straight-edge kids who can sing along as well as “pick up change” amidst the frenzy, this release is seminal. For EARTH CRISIS themselves, this EP is a crucial touchstone; the territory explored on ‘Firestorm’ is the basis for everywhere else the group has ventured on subsequent outings, further into militant eco-politics and further soundwise into new realms of heaviness,” [commented Matt Kantor, AllMusic – more here]

This line-up released the band's debut LP, ‘Destroy The Machines’ in 1995 via Victory Records, with second album, ‘Gomorrah's Season Ends’, following a year later. As EARTH CRISIS popularity grew, Roadrunner Records took notice, and after replacing Wiechmann with Edwards' brother Erick, and engaging the services of producer Andy Sneap, the label released 1998's ‘Breed The Killers’, featuring guest vocal appearance by MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn. EARTH CRISES returned to Victory Records for the last album before their breakup in 2001; a collection of covers and demos from the band's earlier career, entitled ‘Last Of The Sane’. EARTH CRISES reunited in 2007, signed a worldwide deal with Century Media in 2008, and released their fifth album, ‘To The Death’, in 2009.

Full Album Stream: As You Drown: Rat King – new album

AsYouDrown_RatKing

Out October 10th, 2011 in Europe / October 11th, 2011 in North America  via Metal Blade Records, listen to the new album by Swedish extreme death metallers AS YOU DROWN before its release here – on Metal Hammer. ‘Rat King’ was recorded at the band's own AYD Studio in Borås, Sweden and was mixed and mastered by Plec at Panic Room Studio in Skövde, also Sweden. Lyrically, the album is said to explore that mind-stimulating medieval German folk phenomena of “rat kings”, associated with plagues that devastated the European continent. (“Rat Kings are phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, excrement or simply knotted. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at the tails. The numbers of rats that are joined together can vary, but naturally [lets us know Wikipedia] “rat kings” formed from a larger number of rats are rarer.” I read that alcohol-preserved specimens of purported rat kings are kept in some museums in Germany, therefore if you’re in a band currently touring Germany I see no reason why you should not look up the largest known mummified “rat king” found in 1828 in a miller's fireplace at Buchhaim, these days proudly exhibited at Mauritianum museum in Aletnburg, heh.)  And do not forget to buy the ‘Rat King’, the album, which features artwork by Mark Riddick and Sven de Caluwe (ABORTED, SYSTEM DIVIDE) here via Metal Blade.

AS YOU DROWN (once known as “Ethereal”) was formed in Borås, Sweden in 2003 by guitarists Mikael Åkerström and Simon Exner and drummer Martin Latvala. With three demos under their belt, the band beefed up the line-up in 2005 by adding bassist Robert Karlsson and vocalist Henrik Blomqvist. ‘Reflection’, their debut album, was recorded at AYD Studio in Borås, mixed and mastered by Christian Silver at Studio Mega in Varberg, Sweden, and was released internationally through Metal Blade Records in 2009:

“These guys are a whirling ball of fury, combining the grotty guitar sound of classic acts from their homeland like ENTOMBED and GRAVE with the relentless breakdowns, complex riffing, and blast-furnace vocals of contemporary deathcore acts like SUICIDE SILENCE and Metal Blade labelmates WHITECHAPEL,” [observed Phil Freeman, AllMusic – more of it here]

Hull: Beyond The Lightless Sky – new album

Hull_BeyondTheLightlessSky

AOL Music is currently streaming the new album by HULL, American sludge & progressive metal group, entitled ‘Beyond The Lightless Sky’ right here. The album was recorded with engineer and percussionist Brett Romnes (IATA) (“Within an enormous, darkened club, many nights fell into morning as the immense sound was captured for the album.”) and mixed by (“madman”) Billy Anderson. The album's release date is October 11th, 2011 on The End Records.

“Digging further into the past, the Mayan epic takes the listener through a division of two brothers and the struggles that they are faced with. One finds salvation amongst the stars and the wisdom of a stranger, while the other is mesmerized with the bloodthirsty belief of sacrifice and self mutilation. In silence lies a realm that exists outside the plane of fear,” [explains the meaning of the words that accompany the music the press release – read the entire HULL “saga” starting with the 2007's ‘Viking Funeral’ here (HULL official)]

“The deafening clap of thunder that is HULL” come from Brooklyn, New York. The “massive entity storming stages and immersing their audiences in a blanket of grandiose down-tuned compositions” first mesmerized the listening public with their 2007-released EP entitled ‘Viking Funeral’ - composed of a single, 17-minute song in two parts, exhibiting a wide range of styles ranging from doom, to sludge to post-hardcore. HULL continued to “command their listeners through each riff with incredible precision, as a seafarer guides vessels through ominous waters” with their debut full-length, ‘Sole Lord’, released in 2009 via The End Records:

“After all of the seismic, slothful riffing, frenzied hardcore outbursts, throaty vocal roars, and gentle atmospheric backdrops are wheeled out for all to appraise (see ‘Transition’, ‘Healer’, ‘Architect’ etc.), HULL are left with just a handful of unquestionably memorable tricks within their arsenal that help to lift this release slightly above the national average. … Chances are, there will be dozens more special moments, besides, depending on the genre experience of any given listener, which is really the key takeaway here: anyone intimately familiar with all that came before in the post-metal multi-verse will realize there’s only so much praise to be heaped on a genre exercise, no matter how good and well executed it is by the members of HULL; but first-time travelers might understandably think ‘Sole Lord’ is a revelatory, one-of-a-kind, and positively religious musical experience,” [examined the subject and the genre Eduardo Rivadavia, AllMusic Guide – more here]

HULL features the following Reverends: A. Mack, J. Stieber, C. Laietta V, N. Palmirotto, and Rev. S.B. Dunn

Misfits: The Devil's Rain – new album

Misfits_TheDevilsRain

Out internationally today, October 4th, 2011, listen to the MISFITS' new album, ‘The Devil's Rain’, in its devilish entirety over at AOL Music – click here. ‘The Devil's Rain’ is the group's first original material album in over a decade; the 16 tracks  were produced and mixed by Ed Stasium and mastered by Greg Calbi. The album's artwork was created by American comic book artist Arthur Suydam. ‘The Devil's Rain’ was released via MISFITS own label, Misfits Records.

MISFITS were formed over 30 years ago in Lodi, New Jersey by Glenn Danzig and Jerry Caiafa (Jerry Only). Taking for their name the title of Marilyn Monroe's final movie, “The Misfits”, the group had set out to immortalize black and white B horror films in their music, helped by hand made musical weapons and stiletto hairstyle they called the “devil lock”. Joined by drummer Manny Martínez, the group recorded their first single, ‘Cough/Cool’, in 1977. Manny was soon replaced by new drummer “Mr. Jim” Catania, and guitarist Frank LiCata (“Franché Coma”) joined up for the four-song EP ‘Bullet’, released by the band's own Plan 9 label in 1978. That same year the MISFITS recorded a full-length ‘Static Age’ which would be eventually released in 1997 via Caroline Distribution. Franché Coma would quit the group to be replaced by guitarist Bobby Steele, joined by new drummer Joey Image (born Johnny Poole). This line-up recorded the three-song EPs ‘Horror Business’ and ‘Night Of The Living Dead’ in 1979. Image and Steel left the band after the UK tour with THE DAMNED and were replaced by drummer Arthur Googy (also known as Joseph McGuckin) and guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein (Paul Caifa, younger brother of Jerry). ‘3 Hits From Hell’ EP (1981) was followed by the first full-length album, ‘Walk Among Us’, released in 1982 through Slash Records subsidiary Ruby:

“Utterly devoid of political confrontation or social uplift, embracing a costume sense that might have given KISS pause and generally coming across like the horror-movie nightmares they looked like on the cover, the MISFITS just wanted to entertain and do their own thing - and that they did, brilliantly. Nearly every song on the album - 13 total, delivered in a light-speed 25 minutes - is a twisted classic, with the band's trademark '50s/'60s melodies run through a punk/metal meatgrinder on full display,” [wrote Ned Raggett, AllMusic]

During the national tour in support of the album that followed the release, Googy was kicked out of the band by Danzig and was replaced by former BLACK FLAG drummer Robo (Julio Roberto Valverde Valencia). A live EP ‘Evilive’, featuring guest appearance by BLACK FLAG frontman Henry Rollins, was recorded during the tour (released in 1987). Danzig disbanded the MISFITS in late 1983; an album entitled ‘Earth A.D.’ was released by him in 1983, and a farewell single, the three-song ‘Die Die My Darling’ was issued in 1984. After a decade-long legal battle, the MISFITS were resurrected in 1996 by founding member Jerry Only. He recruited singer Michale Graves and drummer Dr. Chud (David Calabrese) with whom he recorded the full-length ‘American Psycho’. Released in 1997 on Geffen Records, the effort debuted  at number 117 on Billboard's Top 200.

“It was great making a new record and getting back in touch with our fans,” [remembers Only] “Sticking to our punk roots, the longest song on the album is three minutes and nine cuts are under two. We still had the classic backup vocals, the '50s sounding chord progressions, the different beats, but the sound of our instrumentation was way better than what was possible when we started out.”

‘Famous Monster’ was released through Roadrunner Records in 1999, followed by the covers album, ‘Project 1950’, in 2003. By this point the MISFITS line-up included Jerry Only on vocals and bass, BLACK FLAG's Dez Cadena on guitar, and Marky Ramone (RAMONES) on drums. Ramone has been since replaced by Eric “Chupacabra” Arce.

Black Water Rising: No Halos – new video

BLACK WATER RISING's new video, ‘No Halos’, was directed by Noah Shulman (who directed BWR debut video ‘Brother Go On’ – available below), produced by Sleepless City Productions and stars the actor Jose Hernandez Jr. ‘No Halos’ comes from the group's debut self-titled album, finally released in Europe via Metalville (June 2011).

Featuring former DUST TO DUST vocalist Rob Traynor, former STEREOMUD guitarist Johnny Fattoruso, former BOILER ROOM drummer Mike Meselsohn and bassist Oddie McLaughlin, BLACK WATER RISING assembled around 2006 in Brooklyn, New York, “not looking to reinvent the wheel, they just wanted to give it a much needed alignment in these musically stale times”. Their music described as that of “BLACK LABEL SOCIETY but with more Southern spin” by David Jeffries, AllMusic, the band states they have “set out to create a no frills, riff raging, turbo charged, wall of pure kick ass power rock”, and they believe they have achieved that. Guitarist John Fattoruso commented in an interview with Metal Underground:

“We wear our influences on our sleeves, everything from the '70s to now. You’ll hear PANTERA-ish style riffs in there, you’ll hear southern riffs, you’ll hear straight up rock stuff. It’s a good mix of everything but it has great vocals. It’s got groove, it’s got melody. Any true metal head, and when I say metal head I don’t mean thrash metal or death metal, I mean just someone who appreciates good heavy music, would definitely like it. If they want to hear good vocals, we’ve got it. If you want to hear screaming, it’s on there too. We don’t shy away from anything. We cover the whole spectrum of what we want to do. We don’t paint ourselves into a corner. We do what we feel. If it feels good, we play it.” [Read the rest of the interview conducted by Ty Arthur here]

Thrash Or Die: Wake Up And Smell The Thrash – new video

What a morning (and what a way to start the new Jewish year of 5772); Miami, Florida's THRASH OR DIE (“Thrashing is our business and business is… doin' alright!”) have come up with first ever thrash metal music video with puppets! Directed by Dan Jackson (Hellbent Productions), with puppets being the responsibility of Jill Domings and Jason Salzarulo of Soi Transitional, ‘Wake Up And Smell The Thrash’ comes from THRASH OR DIE's debut album ‘Poser Holocaust’, out now through Empingao Records – buy here.

“[Read THRASH OR DIE official bio – it’s worth your while:] The band was formed under unusual circumstances on May 9, 2007 by VoKillist Dr. Fukk and Guitarist, Hellvomit Sodomizer. Just months before the birth of THRASH OR DIE, Dr. Fukk and Hellvomit Sodomizer were arch enemies. Oddly enough, in the midst of chaos, Dr. Fukk saved Hellvomit Sodomizer from a very dangerous situation and even ceased the opportunity to threaten his life. This unsuspected turn in the pages of history then created a very strong allegiance between the former rivals. Quickly did they begin writing songs, and teamed up with other local musicians who were as hungry for the thrash as they were. Unfortunately, not too long after the songwriting process did some squad of aliens decide to invade earth. They captured several former members of the band, but luckily, all members were replaced after the aliens went back out in to space somewhere, thus; making THRASH OR DIE or Die stronger than ever! The band is currently promoting their debut album, ‘Poser Holocaust’, full of soon to be Thrashterpieces. There is only one problem… a horrible zombie manifestation has invaded the little Cuban town of Hialeah, and the members of THRASH OR DIE have all been rumored of being infected. Only you can help find the antidote by spreading the word of THRASH OR DIE by going out to the local shows, buying their stuff and telling everyone about them! Spread the word like the virus, start up a circle pit and bang your heads before it's too late!!!”

THRASH OR DIE features: Dr. Fukk – VoKills, Darth Vodka – drums, Triplesixxx Whoremangler – bass and Pat - live session guitars

RSJ: Collectively We Are Tall – new video

Due to explicit nature of this video, viewers discretion is advised, heh.

Out of the walled city of York, United Kingdom, comes metalcore act RSJ. Their disturbing (and somewhat adorable) new video for ‘Collectively We Are Tall’, taken from the band's forthcoming release ‘Higgs Boson’, was choreographed by Sam Richmond and filmed by Matt Huxford.

Formed in 2002, RSJ released a couple of EPs, ‘The Day After’ (2002) and ‘Blueprint For A Brighter Future’ (2004), before their debut full-length, Dave Chang-produced ‘Reflections In B Minor’ came out in 2005 via British independent label Copro Records. After the tour with Australian grinders THE BEZERKER, the band returned to the studio to record their second album, ‘Gain To Nothing’, released in 2007. The album won RSJ the UK's Glasswerk award for “Best New Metal Band” of that year and an exposure on the UK TV station Scuzz TV, which consequently got the band an opening slot, alongside AMON AMARTH, MASTODON and TRIVIUM, on SLAYER's third “Unholy Alliance” tour.

RSJ features: Dan Cook – vocals and samples, Matthew Gamblin – bass and backing vocals, Vaughn Thomas – guitar and backing vocals, Dan Kentley – guitar and effects and Greg Parsons – drums and percussion
